The Location
Ranked the second most liveable city in the world by The Economist in 2008, Melbourne is an exciting and vibrant hub of business, culture and sport. Often touted Australia’s cultural centre, Melbourne hosts a non-stop program of festivals, major local and international art exhibitions, world-class sports events and musical extravaganzas.
The University of Melbourne is located in the inner-city suburb of Carlton and is only a short walk or tram ride from Melbourne’s city centre. It is just a few minutes away from Lygon Street cafes and restaurants, and is close to bohemian Brunswick Street and diverse Sydney Road.
Melbourne is one of Australia’s most important business centres. Key Melbourne-based industries include automobile, biotechnology, consulting, finance, IT, manufacturing, pharmaceutical and tourism.
More than 50% of all major healthcare and biotech companies are headquartered in Melbourne. Many of the listed companies on the Australian Stock Exchange are in Melbourne, and a significant number have their headquarters in the city.
Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia. The city centre is home to 71,000 people and welcomes more than 710,000 workers, visitors and tourists everyday. Greater Melbourne is home to 3.6 million people from 140 nationalities and the largest international student population in the country.
