Query on Selection of Course and job prospect
Posted by - joydeepdebnath - on 10 October 2012 - 3:06pm
Hi,
I am in a deep confusion whether to join a MIM/MIF/MIFEngg course or do MBA after a certain period of time....
I am a fresh graduate from India...I graduated from National Institute of Technology in Mechanical Engineering with GPA 7.59/10 in june,2012
I joined a construction company in contracts Dept regarding a Polysilicon manufacturing plant construction project working in Doha , Qatar
I am going to give GMAT in coming Dec and hoping for a decent score.. and will apply for courses starting in fall 2013.
I'll have around 6-7 months work experience at the time of submitting application and I am slightly inclined towards MIF/MIFEngg/ MIM programs.. Europe is well known for MIM, MIF programs, but the recent changes in VISA and post graduation work permit scenario in Europe is also troubling my decisions..
So i need proper advise...
also some suggestions about the MIM/Masters in Finance programs offered by US business schools for pre-experience candidates..It would be really helpful for me to make decisions...
Thanks...

And about the other two queries that I have mentioned in the 1st post here... Can u look into that matter too ??
- Recent changes in VISA and post graduation work permit scenario in Europe... can be a trouble to me after MIM/MIF course..
- MIM/Masters in Finance programs offered by recognized US business schools for pre-experience candidates...

Hi there,
let me ask back: Why do you want to do a Master soon? Are you not happy with your job?
best wishes

Thanks for replying..
As I am from Mechanical background... starting career in a EPC and project based company is great.. but the conditions of living is not at all good here due to management problems... which is troubling me and my family very much...
Adding to that the 1st stage of the project to which i am assigned will be over by june-july 2013... after that switching to other company will be difficult for me.. (due to qatar rules) ..
Apart from that I have aspirations to do management course also...
so with about 6-7 months experience... will the decision be good for me.. ??Posted by - Thomas Graf - on 11 October 2012 - 12:29am
Ok, I understand. Then a Master makes sense indeed.
- either Masters in General Management (MIM) or Business
- or specialized Business Masters, e.g. the Master in Finance
Which type of master you choose depends on what you want AFTER the master.
- do want to become a finance expert? Go for a MIF.
- do you want general management knowledge and keep your future more open, do an MIM
Best

Hi there,
as for the VISA question, I think the best is if you
- try to clear this country-wise (not area-wise)
- contact your embassy in the respective country - they should be able to help you well (and specifically with respect to working or study permissions for your nationality)
- contact the respective business school you are interested in;
Actually this could be a schoool selection criterion for you: Does the school of your interest have experience with students from your country and with placing them in jobs aftergraduation? If yes, this could be helpful for you; if not maybe you want to consider a different school.
As for the schools in the US:
US MIM programs are not included in the Financial Times MIM Ranking so far and the MIM only slowly gains recognition in the US (that's my impression); so there is no direct measure of reputation and you need to proxy the quality of a MIM program through other sources - e.g. if the school has a great reputation as a graduate school or as a provider of MBA programs; the Business Week page may be helpful here (check the rankings). Some renowned North American MIM programs are offered from the **Richard Ivy School for instance. Also Hult has two campuses in the US. But there may be more.
As for MIF programs in the US, the Financial Times has some US schools (e.g. Olin) in their Master of Finance Ranking. But eventually I recommend you use our Search Filter at www.mim-compass.com and
- search for Master in Finnace programs
- fulltime
- Entry requirements: no academic degree in business needed
and check out the schools one by one.
Best wishes
Thomas
