MIM OR MFIN

  • Posted by - Layovic - on 12 October 2015 - 9:51am

Hello Thomas, I have a computer science major and I am interested in pursuing a career in finance. I am considering doing a masters in finance or in management. Currently I want an investment banking job but subsequently might be interested in Private equity or VC or something more strategic. And also I fear that I might not be able to pick up an investment banking job immediately after my masters courses. So are these reasons good enough for me to subscribe to Masters in management or would a masters in finance be more useful? Also, could I get an investment banking job with a masters in management? Thank you very much for your speedy response.

      Hi there,

I underdstand your motivation to do a business master. Now, the next steps are exactly these: To understand which program TYPE (a more general or a more specialist master) helps you more to achieve your career goals. And the second step will be to identify the adequate programs.

My intuition is that you should do a Master in Finance as your career goal is to find a job in the finance industry anyway. Later on, after some years of professional experience, you can still consider doing an MBA if you need general management knowledge.

To better understand the logic of linking your future education and your career goals and also to learn how you find the right programs, however, please read my eBook "The MIM - How you find the best Master in Management". It is about how you find the right business master and how you find the right school. Particularly, you learn how to find answers to questions such as "What is the best school and program for me"?

          My dear,

have you read the final page of the survey...? It says: Please give us a week until we send the eBook to you. So, if you bring some patience with you, you may see that there is no fake...

          Best wishes,
          Thomas

Thanks a lot Thomas, I'll also like to ask. Is it true that Consultancy firms, PE and hedge funds are recruiting more Mba graduates? After a career in banking could a Mba help me make the switch to PE VC or hedge funds? Thanks

I don't know numbers. But based on my observation in the last 10 years, I am sure that this is possible. It depends, however, on the program and school. Not every MBA and every school will help you change the industry. And this leads us back to the logic of my eBook and my tips how to choose the right school - whether for a pre-experience business master such as a MIM or MFin - or a post-expereince Master such as the MBA. The MBA at the right school will attract firsm to recruit. You gotta find out those schools in advance - only then the MBA wil help you to get into that industry.

Before you do that, however, you should assess if an MBA is necessary then. Maybe you get your new position directly (read my chapter "The right timing".
