MIM or MBA 3 years of Work Experience
Posted by - aryan - on 7 December 2016 - 8:14am
Hi Guys
I have 3.6 years of work experience but not at a managerial position. I applied to Macquarie University for MBA but they transferred me to Master of Management. Dont know whether to go ahead with it or not. Still waiting to hear from Deakin and UTS.
What would you guys recommend in this situation? I am no longer working as i left the company in September.Plus the cost of Masters of Management is somewhat similar to that of MBA.
Please advise.

Hi there,
in general, there are some clear differences between an MBA and a Master in Management, as I outlined in detail in my eBook "Business Masters". For instance, in terms of
- admissions requirements
- target groups
- career prospectives
- and event content
With 3.6 years of professional experience, I would see you as a clear MBA candidate. Therefore, I don't understand why they recommended you the Master in Management.
If I was you, I would contact the Master in Management team, explain them your situation and ask them which program they find more suited for you. Then you compare the two opinions. Maybe they also think you are an MBA candidate and contact their MBA department colleagues to clarify this situation.
Independent of the program type you choose: Most importantly, you should specify your career goals (those goals you wish to pursue directly after graduating) and analyze to what degree the respective program can help you achieve these goals.
Most parts of my eBook tackles on this and gives advice. But to give you an example: It doesn't make sense to study at a school where no investment bank recruits if your goal is to work for an investment bank. Also, it doesn't make sense to study a program where companies recruit for career entry positions from when you are looking for advanced positions (with higher pays).
All the best

The reason they gave me for not admitting me in MBA is that i dont have Managerial Experience like Team Leader. They think i wont be able to justify my work experience in the MBA.
Deakin University is admitting me in their MBA course.
The ranking of Macquarie is better then Deakin but again the question is will i be able to justify the same investment in MIM as i would in MBA?

Hi Aryan,
thanks for your message. My answer to your question remains the same, however. Let me repeat: Whether you decide for program A or program B depends on your goals and on the benefits of the respective program.
As you find in detail in my eBook - and maybe you should ask yourself whether investing 3 hours to read it carefulyl wouldn't be a good investment ... - you gotta ask yourself:
What goals do you wish to achieve with a MIM or MBA?
- e.g., building up your business knowledge
- e.g., find a specific job at a specific firm or industry?
- if yes, which kind of job (marketing, banking etc.) and which firm?
- where? in Europe, US, Asia...?
- e.g., building up a network?
And then you have to check which of the schools or programs offer you more benefits = increase the likelihood that you achieve your goals.
- What firms / recruiters come on the campus to recruit MBA graduates and MIM graduates?
- Are these the firms you are looking for?
- Where do the graduates of these program find a job later on? What kind of jobs?
etc.
In my eBook I give you many tips on how you can find out this info. First you gotta find this info, then you will know which program or school is better suited for you.
Best wishes,
Thomas
