Masters in Finance and then Mim?
Posted by - Chris - on 21 October 2016 - 12:15am
I want to do a one year Masters in Finance at my school and then do a MiM at a Top school (Bocconi, UCL, LBS/LSE). I just wondered if that's possible, if you can apply to a Master in Management with a Master in Finance? Or do MiM only take in bachelor students?
Thanks!

Thank you very much for your answer! The reason why I might have to do a Master in Finance is because I want to buy time and increase My chances to get a MiM at a top school! I want to work within Investment Banking but My current University is far from a target school! Therefore I thought I could buy time with a Msc in Finance or Corporate Financial Management and then apply again for a MiM if I don't succeed the first time!
This might sound a little weird but then I will have a specialized master degree and a MiM that would work well together I believe...but of course I am still not sure. I Will try to get a Msc Finance or MiM straight away at a Top School, and if I don't thats when I Will be doing my master in Finance I thought instead to get another chance to apply to a top school.
Thanks again for your reply, much appreciated!

Hi there,
formally you can do that. As long as you don't have some years of work experience, you are free to choose a MIM. With experience, it would be the MBA. The question is, however, if it makes sense to do both Masters.
The Master in Finance is a specialized degree - you will become a finance expert and typically apply for finance service jobs afterwards.
The Master in Management is a general management degree where you cover all kinds of business function courses such as accounting, strategy, HR, supply chain or IT mangement more or less equally and - compared with your MFin - superficially. WIth this education,, you can start any position that does not require specialized knowledge (e.g., consulting).
I recommend you to reflect clearly in advance how you would like to start your career - what industry, what job or tasks, what sort of employers. Imagine you could onkly do one of the two Masters, which one would you choose then? Which one would help you more achieve your career goal after the Master?
If the answer is "The Master of Finance" then I would (1) do this MFin, (2) start your career, (3) work 2-5 years and (4) consider an MBA at some point later.
If the answer is "The MIM", then you may watch out for MIM programs with a concentration or electives in finnacve-related subjects.
To deepen this logic, I also recommend you to read my Business Masters eBook.
Best wishes,
