Low GPA

    Hi Thomas,

I have just completed my Bachelor of engineering (B.E) in Mechanical engineering from Birla Institute of technology and Sciences (BITS) Pilani which is supposed to be number one private institute for engineering in India.
I have two choices like most people after graduating. One is Ms and another is MBA. My inclination is towards mba and as it requires job experience I just started working. The job is an engineering related job and nowhere related to management.
As I was browsing through various forums about mba admission I noticed that gpa is a very important criteria. I happen to have a low cgpa of 6.1/10. I was just wondering if I should continue to work and apply for mba admission after 2 or 3 years or should I go for MIM and then go for mba after working for a few years after that because I am very much interested in pursuing my mba from a reputed top b school. Another concern is will they consider me for MIM admission with such low cgpa.

Thanks for replying in advance. :)

      Hi Ankit,

I cannot help you with your cgpa - you may need to find this out by directly asking the schools of your interest (the program admission managers respectively).

Regarding your other question - MIM now or MBA later - I recommend you to evaluate your CURRENT career situation. If you are happy with your current career situation and your career options, then I wouldn't do a Master. Instead I would "exploit" your professional situation by gaining experience and simply doinga a good job. If at some point in the future you think that an MBA would be interesting for you - e.g. because you need more knowledge or a title - then you can still decide for an MBA.

Alternatively, if you are not happy with your current career situation I would consider a Master for graduates, for instance a Master in Management. Whether you do an MBA later on, however, is irrelevant now.

To sum it up: Try to assess what you need NOW. Does that help?

      Best wishes
      Thomas

Also the current job is neither challenging in the mechanical field and nor does my position have anything to do with the management side of the company. The reason I joined is its a business related company and focuses on providing affordable water to under served societies(but is a profit based organization). Will this help me in any way as a job experience ?
