      Good Evening Thomas,
I'm from India and my name is Prerna Gulati. ( female, 23 years).

So I'm currently applying to some schools in Europe for a Master in Management. My profile looks like this: GMAT 650, CLASS 12- 95%, CLASS 10 -94% , IELTS 8.5, work experience of 1 year at an import export firm, College- St Xavier's College Kolkata, Graduated with Bcom Honours under Calcutta University with 72.33% ( cutoff for first class honours is 60%), Extracurriculars involve- basketball, tennis .

Do i stand a chance for HEC (paris), ESSEC,ESCP,EMLYON , RSM? Should I retake the GMAT? Ive looked at the average GMAT SCORES as mentioned by the Schools on their websites- so while HEC may be a stretch for me ( Since my Gmat score isn't>700) , Schools like Emlyon have an average Gmat Score of 640. How do I interpret this average? Because averages can be skewed . I possess a very strong academic background and I must start my MIM by Sept 2015. Please guide me. Do i have a good chance?

      Thank You

        Hi there,

have you read my MIM eBook already? This will cover most of your questions: e.g., read the GMAT chapter for understand what "average" score means and how you should interpret it etc. If you still have questions not covered in my eBook feel free to ask again.

        Best wishes
        Thomas

hi, I did read your book, in particular the Gmat section. I guess what what Im trying to ask is whether I stand a good chance of making it to some of the top schools in Europe with this score. I just dont want to land myself in a situation where I've retaken the Gmat and scored worse than in my first attempt.
          Thank you

            Hi there,

great! So, what does page 52 and page 53 in my eBook tell you about your chances to gain admission at a renowned school, with respect to the GMAT? Add page 54 (academic grade in your previous studies).

If you take the bottom line out of this pages, what do you think about your chances of getting in?

            Best wishes

      Hi

I will be giving my GMAT in June, 2013. I intend to apply for the MiM programs of HEC Paris and ESSEC France in early 2014. I am utterly confused though. I get a feeling that I have a matching profile so I am getting anxious. I want to know the kind of profiles that get selected. What is their mean Indian GMAT score? What are the profiles they prefer? Does having a particular profile add any advantage?

      My Profile:
3rd year in Comp Engg from a very good engineering college
below avg on academic score - 63%.
Internship in 3 start ups(2 months each) (1 business development, 2 indirectly related to finance).
Social work through a college organization(1.5 yrs)
Social work through a separate internship in an NGO(0.5 yrs).
Two "Cerified" courses on finance through coursera. (just incase it helps)
MUNs(not very important though, will probably exclude them)
Head of School Athletic Team for 2 yrs(included this to showcase leadership since school)

PS:Still looking for a "Branded" internship (have been advised to "complete my profile" through a branded one)
I can also include small insignificant stuff like fests and events.
...and trying to publish a number of articles on social stuff on a reputed youth website.

Ofcourse a lot depends on my GMAT too but still I'd like to know if I stand anywhere in competition to calm myself down and focus on GMAT.

Talking about essays and interviews, I can greatly expound upon my social work experience and internships

      Please reply(really anxious).

        Hi there,

thank you for your question. In general, I recommend you to calm down a bit. Keep in mind that it is not only you who wants to get a place at a school - it is also the school that looks for good students (you!).

It will be difficult to find out every single detail that you are interested in; for instance, you hardly will find out their "mean Indian GMAT score"... You can, however, screen the school's website and actually ask the admissions team politely for some statistics on the student profiles, for instance where they come from (how many from India) or what they have done before. Also, I received the information from HEC that a GMAT around 630 is treated as a good GMAT.

Also, you can ask them to bring you in contact with a current Master student. Then you can ask him or her on inside information including the profile of other students.

My final recommendation is: Prepare the GMAT well and try to achieve a minimum of 600, ideally 630 or even more - and then compose the application well, particularly the essays.

        Best wishes
        Thomas

      Hi there,

thank you for your question and compliment. However, I am afraid you need to find out this information by visiting the schools' website one by one. There you find the following information:

      (1) If the school requires the GMAT or not.
      (2) If the school requires the GMAT, then often schools also publish their average GMAT scores. If this average score is 580 you may get in with 530. If it is 700 it may be difficult.

In general, let me mention that 530 is not very high (if you allow me to say that). So let me give you an advice: It may be a worthwhile pathway to look for schools that do not require the GMAT at all (more than the majority does not require it for the MIM) - instead of trying to get into a school that accepts 530. Just an advice, hope it's helpful.

      Best wishes
      Thomas
