From derivatives and investments to mergers and acquisitions and global markets, this course covers the essential information you need to pursue a range of exciting careers in finance at a UK or international level, or an academic career via a PhD. Recent recruiters include: China Telecom Corporation, Cisco Systems, Deloitte, Emirates NBD Bank, Ernst & Young, Macquarie Capital, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Statoil ASA Course structure (all taught course units are 15 credits) Semester 1 - Introduction to Quantitative Methods - Essentials of Finance - Derivative Securities One course unit from: - Foundations of Finance Theory - Portfolio Investment - International Macroeconomics and Global Capital Markets Semester 2 - Financial Econometrics - Advanced Empirical Finance - Corporate Finance One course unit from: - Financial Statement Analysis - International Finance - Real Options in Corporate Finance - Mergers and Acquisitions: Economic and Financial Aspects Summer research period Research dissertation (60 credits) The dissertation is an integral part of the course. It gives you the opportunity to apply what you have learned in the taught part of the course. The dissertation normally involves empirical research. Typical topic areas link to the research interests of the faculty and include: corporate financial strategy, the investment performance of firms, mergers, initial public offerings, market efficiency, and the role and valuation of derivative securities. Examples of recent dissertation project topics include: • Tests of analysts’ earnings forecasts • An empirical analysis of corporate financing policies and corporate governance • Forecasting financial and macroeconomic variables using VARs • Unit IPOs versus share only IPOs • Corporate governance and cross-border acquisitions. Course recognition The course meets the present ESRC guidelines for Masters degrees and has ESRC recognition as a postgraduate training year in preparation for a PhD. It also holds the award of partnership status from the CFA Institute, the global association for investment professionals. |
