e-Business Technology
The explosive growth of the internet has created many opportunities for business. You can help companies take advantage of these opportunities and shape future innovation and performance improvement in e-business and e-commerce. You gain an understanding of the critical relationship between different business models and the internet technologies and network architecture that support them. As well as looking at internet-enabled transactions and communications, you learn to manage internal and external business processes, support knowledge creation, and develop and maintain relationships. You investigate internet and distributed systems development, human-computer interaction approaches to web applications design, and patterns for e-business applications. This course appeals to students with an IT background and some relevant work experience, although this is not essential.

Course structure

(all taught course units are 15 credits)

The first eight months contain three compulsory course units and five optional course units, followed by the dissertation.

You are required to study the following core units:

- Industrial Leadership Forum

- Research Methods and Practice

Plus the following core unit according to your pathway:

Business Information Technology

- Human Computer Interaction and Web User Interfaces e-Business Technology

- e-Business Organisations and Management

- IS Strategy and Enterprise Systems

Plus five optional course units from a range of subjects (subject to timetabling and prior experience). At least three of them have to be chosen from the core electives of the course.

Summer research period

Dissertation/Project (60 credits)

You must complete a satisfactory dissertation to be awarded your MSc, which should also be related to your chosen pathway. This piece of work, undertaken in your third term and over the summer, gives you the opportunity to apply the techniques and theories you have learned during the taught modules. Dissertation topics reflect the expertise of your lecturers and you may be asked to choose from a list of options.

Supervision often starts with small groups of students studying similar topics meeting with their supervisors, who then guide students in deciding on the focus for their individual dissertations. The dissertation itself normally consists of a literature review followed by a piece of empirical work, involving either qualitative or quantitative research. Some feature industrial placements.

• Change management methods of a multinational consultancy company (based on a company placement)

• Business cases for customer relationship management (based on a company placement with a pharmaceutical multinational)

• The role of consultancy companies in selling technology solutions

• Innovation in the public sector (with government sector partners).
