Description:

From the smallest company to national governments, ICT is shaping the way organisations operate. As a manager or marketing professional you can help improve communications with employees and customers by harnessing the power of modern technology. Boost your career prospects by focusing on information systems for
businesses or the public sector with one of our three expert pathways.

Organisations and Management
In the current financial climate, organisations are facing major challenges and having to adapt their business practices to survive. The internet, blogging, Web 2.0 and online auctions are changing the ways goods and services are sold, and how organisations manage their daily work. This pathway gives you the critical knowledge to help companies face these new challenges. You look at organisational practice and how the potential application of information systems (IS) can help businesses improve their practices. You gain a much sought-after insight into how IS are related to organisational structures and management practices, and the effectiveness of both. As well as providing a thorough understanding of IS and its use in business and organisational practice, this pathway also focuses on managing the relationship between people, organisations and technology in contemporary society. You gain transferable employment-related skills so that you can compete in today’s business climate.

Recent recruiters include:

Summer research period

Dissertation/Project (60 credits)

You must complete a satisfactory dissertation to be awarded your MSc, which should also be related to your chosen pathway. This piece of work, undertaken in your third term and over the summer, gives you the opportunity to apply the techniques and theories you have learned during the taught modules. Dissertation topics reflect the expertise of your lecturers and you may be asked to choose from a list of options.

Supervision often starts with small groups of students studying similar topics meeting with their supervisors, who then guide students in deciding on the focus for their individual dissertations. The dissertation itself normally consists of a literature review followed by a piece of empirical work, involving either qualitative or quantitative research. Some feature industrial placements.

Recent dissertations include:

• Change management methods of a multinational consultancy company (based on a company placement)

• Business cases for customer relationship management (based on a company placement with a pharmaceutical multinational)

• The role of consultancy companies in selling technology solutions

• Innovation in the public sector (with government sector partners).
