Acquire the specialist knowledge and practical, industry-focused skills you need for a career in human resources as well as developing careers in the regulation of employment within public and social organisations on this CIPD-accredited course. Recent recruiters include: Amazon, ACAS, Barclaycard, Hayes Staff Recruitment, John Lewis Partnership, Kraft Foods, Nestlé, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Tesco, The Bank of New York Course structure (all taught course units are 15 credits) Semester 1 Core units - Human Resource Management: Strategy and Practice - Multinationals and Comparative Employment Systems - Employment Policy and Practice - Research Methods for Organisations Optional unit - Comparative Industrial Relations* Semester 2 Core units - Industrial Relations - Employment Law - Human Resource Management: Context and Organisations Optional units - International Labour Law and Regulation* - International Human Resource Management* * Note: a maximum of eight courses can be taken so you choose only one optional unit. There may be minor changes to the allocation of modules to each semester. Summer research period Research dissertation (60 credits) You must complete a satisfactory dissertation to be awarded your MSc. This piece of work, undertaken in your third term and over the summer, gives you the opportunity to apply the techniques and theories you have learned during the taught modules. Dissertation topics reflect the expertise of your lecturers. Supervision often starts with small groups of students studying similar topics meeting with their supervisors, who then guide students in deciding on the focus for their individual dissertations. The dissertation itself normally consists of a literature review followed by a piece of empirical work, involving either qualitative or quantitative research. Dissertations have been conducted on topics such as: • Disability discrimination • HRM and line management at Tesco • Organisational boundaries and temporary agency staff • Public private partnerships in local authorities • Career expectations of white collar managers • The information and consultation directive and union membership and influence • Employee involvement and participation in the retail sector • Employers’ policies and HIV positive employees • Union membership turnover in UNISON • Organisational change in a building society • Pay and high commitment HRM. Course recognition Successful completion of the course entitles you to Graduate Membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). In 2012-13 the Masters should be accredited to the new equivalent advanced level postgraduate standards, which will allow you to apply for the new associate membership, and beyond, once the degree and CIPD components are completed. Further details are available from the postgraduate administration team at the Students wishing to gain CIPD membership attend a series of skills workshops with guests invited from a wide range of companies, to enable them to develop practical HR skills. The course meets the present ESRC guidelines for Masters degrees and has ESRC recognition as a postgraduate training year in preparation for a PhD. |
