Description: |
Boost your understanding of contemporary healthcare and enhance your career prospects with an MSc Healthcare Management. Work alongside internationally recognised academics and learn from the latest research in one of the top-rated business schools in the world. Many of our international students come from a clinical background, and the course enables them to move more easily into a healthcare management role. The majority of our UK students continue working and take the part-time option of the course. This allows them to apply what they learn in the workplace, and boost their career prospects. Course structure (all taught course units are 15 credits) The course comprises core modules followed by a selection from a range of optional modules allowing you to reflect your personal development and career priorities. You choose two from the four elective modules offered over both semesters. Throughout the course your assessment is primarily based on written assignments of approximately 4,000 words, with some assessed group presentation work. In the second semester, you are given the opportunity to visit health organisations for the purposes of group work and an assessed group presentation (this is subject to the agreement of host organisations at the time). Semester 1 Induction: You start with a two-week induction that gives you the opportunity to get to know other course members, your tutors and to have a brief introduction to the modules. You work in groups on team-building exercises as well as inputs on study methods and how to write assignments. Past students have found this to be valuable, giving them a head start when the taught modules begin. Core modules (both 30 credit modules): - Contemporary Issues in Healthcare Policy - Personal and Organisational Development I (this module continues throughout both semesters including action learning sets) Elective modules - Leadership and Service Improvement - Wider Context of Healthcare Management Semester 2 Core modules - Management and Governance - Research Methods - Personal and Organisational Development II (30 credits with semester 1) including action learning sets Elective modules - Organisational Behaviour - International Healthcare Systems: Themes and Challenges Summer research period You must complete a satisfactory dissertation to be awarded the MSc. For example, you may wish to develop something that is relevant to your own work or that provides a substantial background to an area which you have an interest in. The topic for your dissertation, will be discussed with your personal tutor. You will be encouraged to meet with your tutor who will guide you in deciding on the focus of your individual dissertation. Typically the dissertation itself normally consists of a desk research option such as a literature review or desk-based evaluation or an empirical study in which new data is collected. Your personal tutor will guide you and will ensure that your chosen topic reflects the taught element of the programme whilst adding to your own career needs and aspirations. The taught element on research methods includes guidance on the research process, methodological ‘theory’ and practical sessions and is taught by active researchers. Previous dissertation topics have included: • A comparative analysis of the interventions from international agencies in addressing health needs in a changing climate • Task shifting in relation to the role of nurse practitioners • A systematic literature review on the management of prevention of falls for hospitalised adults • The use and utility of networks in mental health services: a comparison between the US and UK • A systematic review of the application of the systemic framework in managing organisational change within a large publicly funded healthcare setting. |
