Course structure

(All taught course units are 15 credits)

Semester 1

- Introduction to Quantitative Methods

- Essentials of Finance

- Financial Reporting Theory

One course unit from:

- Portfolio Investment

- Accounting in an International Context

- Foundations of Finance Theory

Semester 2

– Advanced Management Accounting

– Corporate Finance

Either

– Research Methods and Methodology

in Accounting (for students doing an Accounting dissertation)

Or

– Advanced Empirical Finance

(for students doing a Finance dissertation)

and one course unit from:

- Financial Statement Analysis

- Financial Econometrics

- International Finance

- Mergers and Acquisitions: Economic and Financial Aspects

Summer research period

Research dissertation (60 credits)

The dissertation is an integral part of the course. It gives you the opportunity to apply what you have learned in the taught part of the course. The dissertation normally consists of a literature survey in an applied or empirical area of accounting and finance followed by a piece of empirical work, involving either qualitative research methods or traditional statistical methods. Typical topic areas link to the research interests of the faculty and include: management accounting, financial reporting, auditing, management information systems, business analysis or public sector financial management.

Examples of recent dissertation project topics include:

• Management accounting in global organisations

• Regulation and the meaning of audit quality

• Football and global finance

• Accounting conservatism pre- and post-IFRS.

Course recognition

The course meets the present ESRC guidelines for Masters degrees and has

ESRC recognition as a postgraduate training year in preparation for a PhD.

It also holds the award of partnership status from the CFA Institute, the global association for investment professionals.
