The optional courses allow you to specialise in particular aspects of international management and business analysis.

Three course units from:

- Technology, Innovation Management and Business Strategy

- Doing Business in Europe

Summer research period

Dissertation/client-facing project with an external organisation (60 credits)

During this period, you will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills learnt during the first two semesters, on a real-life company project. This will enhance and improve your skills and overall employability. The result of this project is presented as a research report/dissertation.

This ‘experiential learning’ helps you to become a reflective practitioner or manager.

The project is offered if you gain a minimum of 50% in each first semester course unit. If not, you will be offered a project related to an external client, with no direct contact with the client. For those working on group projects, a group report and an individual report will be produced (both 6,000 words).

You may either source your own client-facing project or apply via your project co-ordinator, who will also source projects within companies on behalf of MBus students. If you choose to source your own, you are also supported through the process by your project co-ordinator. You are given the list of MBS-sourced projects in March, and you have the opportunity to apply. Following this, interviews are held between the company and student, projects are allocated and start at the beginning of June. Alternatively, you may undertake an academic dissertation of 12,000 words. Your supervisor will help you to define the research and advise, guide and support you throughout.

Recent project reports include:

Past projects have involved our students applying their skills across a range of fields:

• An in-depth analysis of the wholesale market and changing trends towards online shopping

• Strategic positioning in relation to the Offshore Wind Turbine Market in northern Europe

• A performance-profitability relationship analysis on online detection and mapping technology

• Global supply chain analysis of existing supply chain maps to address market failures in developing countries

• Data warehouse management – recoding of goods and processes in order to save costs and speed up processes.

Project clients have included ASDA, AstraZeneca, BAE Systems, BASF, Deloitte, Co-operative Financial Services, HSBC, ICI, Kelloggs, L’Oréal, Manchester United, NHS and UBS.
